One Remedy at a Time

I had the honor of reading an autobiography from a girl named Poppy who attends Qingdao University. She had told me about a time whenever she cut her forehead and she was advised by the doctor to only eat boiled vegetables without any seasonings for a week. This remedy was supposed to help the cut and stitches heal correctly. This got me interested in the medicine they practice in China and how it is different from that of which we practice here in America.

Traditional Chinese Medicine actually began in ancient China. People who practice Chinese medicine mostly use herbal remedies and mind and body practices. Examples of these are: acupuncture, tai chi, and various different herbal remedies. What do these things do to prevent and cure illness? They use the herbal medicines to restore the balance in the patients body and slowly improve it, rather then modern American medicine that aims to treat a disease or sickness head on. Tai chi actually began in china as a self defense art. As it has evolved people have begun to use it for health purposes. Tai chi is said to balance levels of yin and yang(opposing forces within the body) and qi(a vital energy or life force) to make for a better healthier body. Acupunture is a method where you penetrate the skin with small metal needles, it is used to help cure chronic pain.

Although America doesn't solely practice Chinese medicine there are people in America that do practice it and there are many people who use it as well. I think that it would be cool to use Chinese medicine as a primary medicine in America as well because there aren't actual drugs involved like there is here. Also, I think that Chinese medicine must be very affective, since all the people in china have been using it for decades and have been surviving thus far.

Book Response 4: The Choice

In my last post Gabby was still trying to decide if she should pursue the connection she felt with Travis or not. As i have continued to read Gabby has fallen under the spell of Travis and began spending more time with him and his friends while Kevin is a way at his business trip. After a not so long weekend in the arms of Travis Gabby is faced with having to break the news to Kevin that she has fallen in love with Travis. The night before Travis declares his love for Gabby because he can sense how afraid she is to tell Kevin the truth. "I don't want to lose you Gabby,' Travis Says, "I cant imagine seeing you walk to your car every morning and pretending that none of this ever happened, I cant imagine not sitting with you on the couch like we are doing now. And right now, i cant imagine being in love with any other woman."

The quote from Travis was significant because it gave Gabby the hope that she needed to know that after she told Kevin the truth Travis would always be there and always love her no matter what. She could trust her gut that he was the one.
The picture signifies that Gabby is now certain that Travis is the one for her.

Book Response 3: The Choice

The Choice, by Nicholas Sparks is a book about a young, family oriented woman named, Gabby, who moves to a small town to work as a physicians assistant in a hospital near her newly owned home. She is content with her life until she meets her neighbor, Travis. Travis turns her world upside down. She has a plan for her life, to marry her boyfriend of four years and have a life with him, but that plan is derailed when she begins to form feelings for Travis.

"But she couldn't deny that family was important to her. That's the thing about being the product of happily married parents. You grow up thinking the fairy tale is real, and more than that, you think your entitled to live it. So, though, it wasn't working out as planned. She and Kevin had dated long enough to fall in love, survive the ordinary ups and downs that break most couples apart, and even talk about the future. She had decided that he was the one she wanted to spend her life with"(40).

I chose this quote because it explains why Gabby believes she should marry Kevin. Not just out of love, but because that's the order its suppose to go in. I can kind of get a sense of how she thinks about things and how she has lived her life. Her parents play a big role in her decision making even though she doesn't want to admit it.

Gabby struggles with trying not to form feelings for Travis because she knows it will make her question if Kevin truly is the one she should spend the rest of her life with. In the natural scheme of things, Her mind knows its smart to be with the serious, stability of Kevin. However, she cant resist the exciting carelessness of Travis.

Reading Response 2: Everyday

Now that I've finished the book Everyday I'm debatable abut if I like it or I don't like it. Throughout the book A struggles with living everyday as a different person while he is madly in love with a girl named Rhiannon. I loved the book from the beginning to the end, but I hate the way it ends so I guess that's the reason I'm not sure if I like it. It ends so abruptly with so much mystery that I don't even know what to think. The ending line is "Time moves on. The universe stretches out. I take a Post-it of a heart and move it from my body to hers. I see it sitting there. I close my eyes. I say goodbye. I fall asleep." I'm not completely sure what he means by goodbye, if he means goodbye to Rhiannon or what. The book was really god until it ended the way it did.

Reading Response 1:Everyday

Every Day is a book about a teenage boy named "A" who is a different person everyday. He has no problems until the boy he was for a day, Nathan, realizes he wasn't himself. Nathan begin telling everyone he was possessed by the devil. A knows for a fact he wasn't possessed but he struggles with the guilt he feels to make someone believe such a thing.

As A struggles he realizes that people blame the devil for things that he believes the devil does not control. "I think about how people use the devil as an alias for the things they fear. The cause and effect is backward. The devil doesn't make anyone do anything. People just do things and blame the devil after"

I connect to the character through this quote because i believe he is right and it makes a lot of sense. People who choose to do bad things often blame the devil when those bad things cause trouble in their life. IN some peoples minds blaming the devil is easier than blaming themselves. A knows this first hand because he lives as a different person everyday and sees the consequences to peoples actions and knows it isn't the devils fault. Human error comes from the human himself.
